NEW AWARD FOR LIME WORKERS
Wage Increases
Lime workers in Gisborne, Welington, Marlborough, Nelson, Vestland, Canterbury and Southand will receive wage increases ■anging from j?d to Id an hour mder the terms of a new award ssued by the Court of Arbitraion. The highest rates are for turners and drawers on York dins and burners in sole charge if other kilns. They will be paid Ls Hid an hour. The lowest rate is for unclassiied workers employed outside a nill or factory. Their new rate s 4s 7d an hour, an increase of !d. There are no changes in the jxtra rates for foremen, leading lands and workers employed unoading or trimming coal. The travelling allowance for workers living three or more niles from works has been increased by id to 4d a mile. The jilskin and clothing allowance paid to workers substantially employed outside has ieen increased by 6d to 3s 6d a veek.
The award, which is subject to he last general wage order, will continue in force until October 5, 1958. A dissenting opinion held by IVfr F. C. Allerby, the employees’ representative, said that the dusty nature of the work warranted a higher rate. January 2 should be a paid holiday, as it was in an increasing number of awards, and dlothing allowances should be paid to inside workers in lime
