ROCK 'n' ROLL CONTEST
Interest In Event At Greymouth (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH. March 22 Between 2500 and 2800 people packed Greymouth’s Victoria Park tonight for a rock ’n’ roll contest staged as part of the fifth West Coast Industries Fair. Organisers of the contest were jubilant at its success. Last night, a cold evening, between 900 and 1000 persons packed into the Greymouth Trotting Club grandstand. Tonight at least 1600 persons packed the stand until officials realised they would never cope with the crowd. They opened the gates of the birdcage in front of the stand, in which was the 20 square feet rock ’n’ roll platform Hastily-erected rope barriers kept back a crowd of at least 900 in this area, and a further 200 to 300 crowded all available fences overlooking the dancers. Uniformed police stood on duty, but there were no incidents.
