STATISTICS OF SHIPPING

1956 Record Year For Exports (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 22. Last year, fewer ships arrived in New Zealand than in 1955. Figures contained in the February issue of the “Abstract of Statistics” show that 778 ships arrived in New Zealand last year, compared with 824 the previous year. Ships leaving New Zealand totalled 786, as compared with 800 in 1955, but they carried a record amount of export carg0—1,530,498 manifest tons. The development of the port of Tauranga has been of particular interest. the Abstract said. In 1952 Tauranga was twelfth among New Zealand ports for the quantity of outward overseas cargo, with the export, of wood pulp in 1953 and increasing timber exports, Tauranga rose to ninth place and to fourth place last year.
