WOOL SALE AT AUCKLAND

Rise On Timaru Prices

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 22. Average styled crossbred fleece wools advanced in price by fully a penny a pound on recent Timaru levels at the third main Auckland sale of the season today. The market for finer wools was firm in sellers’ favour. All wools were in very keen demand although much of the 1 fleece wool in the offering of 28,994 bales showed discolo.uration due to the wet season before shearing, and the oddments were generally of poor quality. A buyer described the quality of the Auckland clip v this season as the poorest for years. It was apparent that the skirting of many of the lines did not approach South Island standards. Most of today’s offering consisted of crossbred wools and, as is usual at the third sale, there was a smaller proportion of halfbred and Southdown wools. Average 53d per lb

The average price was estimated at about 53d a pound as compared with an actual average of 51.98 d at the January sale. This would bring about £77 a bale. Opening strongly before a full bench of buyers, the market remained steady throughout the day. Buyers representing Continental interests set the pace at the out-

set, but after some initial caution by Bradford buyers competition became general. Buyers for local scouring works were well to the fore. Japan was reported to be occasionally in the picture for fine wools, but not to the same extent as at South Island sales. Top price of the sale for greasy wool was 75jd, which was paid for a binned line of five bales of well-skirted down cross wool. Another binned line of down cross wool sold for 74jd and four bales of extra fine halfbred wool from the property of Mr N. Fisher, Waiheke Island, realised 74d. The rise in values was most marked on the medium crossbred wools and, although finer wools sold well too, buyers did not seem prepared to pay the same premium for these lines.
