LOAN MONEY FOR LOCAL BODIES

Minister’s Charge Denied

(New Zealand Press Auoeiation) AUCKLAND, March 22. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr T. W. M. Ashby, today accused the Minister of Finance, Mr J. T. Watts, of unfairly suggesting that Auckland local bodies in recent years had uplifted more than their share of loan money used by local bodies throughout the country. “Mr Watts stated that the Auckland area, which constitutes 20 per cent, of the population of New Zealand, had uplifted between 28 and 30 per cent, of the loan money used," said Mr Ashby, “but he did not refer to the relative growth of population which has a vital bearing on development and capital works required.”
