SAFETY SIGNS ON ROADS
Issue Of Manual Approved
(Neto Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 21.
The National Roads Board today adopted .a report on road signs by a committee set up by it in October, 1955. The main recommendations were that publication of a manual of highway signs and markings be approved in principle, that a system of route number marking be approved, and that the use of oversize signs be authorised at special localities. The board also decided to explore means to control the erection of advertising signs, particularly reflecting ones, by highways, and approve the adoption of reflecting silver lettering or symbol on a black background with a reflecting yellow border as the standard for warning signs. The use of advisory speed signs at deceptive curves was approved, and also reflecting markers at bridge ends and other obstructions.
The board also favoured the proposed standardisation of road edge delineators, and the use of non-overtaking lines on sections of the highway where visibility is limited.
