PERIMETER BUS SERVICES
Suggestion By Residents
Feeder and perimeter bus services linking the outlying residents of Christchurch to obviate the necessity of their travelling into Cathedral, square to reach an adjoining district was discussed at a meeting of Residents Affiliated last evening. The president (Mr J. Palmer) said that no correspondence had yet been sent to the the Christchurch Transport Board on this matter. Arising from a letter sent in by the Burwood Residents’ Association asking for support for a bus service between Burwood and St. 'Albans, the matter was expanded at the meeting to embrace the possibility of such services being inaugurated to cover the needs of other districts.
Mr F. I. Leigh (Sydenham) suggested that if any reqeust on the matter was made to the Transport Board, is should be presented in more general terms. Replying to another suggestion, by Mrs J. A. Batley, that the chairman of the board (Mr C. C. Holland) be asked to attend a meeting to give his opinion on the feasibility of any additional bus services in ahd around Christchurch, Mr Leigh said that in protecting the board’s interests Mr Holland would be “inclined to give a biased opinion” on the subject. It was then decided to leave the matter until the opinions of all the affiliated associations were given as there was “far from a representative attendance,” said Mr Palmer. z As the association lacked a secretary, it was. decided to send out circulars to the district bodies asking for a nominee for the position and to “threaten them” with an increase of affiliation fees to cover the cost of employing a professional man' if no voluntary help was forthcoming.
