OIL SUPPLY TENDERS
Different Prices Submitted
The electricity committee of the city council received a surprise when it opened tenders for the supply of 50 drums of transformer oil, and found that each of the five oil company tenderers had submitted a different price: “In all cases over the last few years, with one exception, the prices submitted have been identical, but it would now appear that the price agreement, between the companies no longer applies,” the committee reported to the council. “The lowest price of 3s 2d a gallon compares very favourably with the price of 5s 2d a gallon quoted by all tenderers for transformer oil in December.”
The prices varied from 3s 2d a gallon, the tender accepted for the supply of approximately 2200 gallons, to 4s 11-Jd. “It seems that Ned Kelly had nothing on the oil companies.” commented Cr. H. E. Denton. The chairman of the committee (Cr. L. G. Amos): To be fair to the companies, the Suez Capal crisis possibly had some effect.
Cr. Denton: The 5s 2d has been there for a long time. The Suez Canal was just being formed into a company then.
