SUPERANNUATION SERVICE
Discussion By R.S.A.
The Government should allow returned servicemen who entered the public service to buy back service for superannuation purposes without having to pay compound irtterest on it, said Mr G. McMillan at a meetin/ of- the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association. Under a new act that had come into force returned men were now permitted to buy back service lost through overseas service, but the compound interest charged often prevented them from doing so, he said. This was a matter that was going to affect many thousands of persons and he felt that the interest should be compensated from the Consolidated Fund.
For a World War I man who had entered the public service on his-return the 5 per cent, interest over the period of years would amount to a considerable sum, said Mr McMillan. The matter was referred to a committee of the association. It was reported that membership of the association had increased by 198 in the last year and now stood at 8372. A circular received from the headquarters of the N.Z.R.S.A. requested the association to assist in fostering in children an appreciation of the significance of Anzac Day. I The association’s headquarters on Poppy Day this year will be in the Jellicoe Hall as the Scottish Hall, which has been used in previous years, is no longer available. Thirteen new members were elected to the association. It was reported that 368 visits had been made during the month to sick members in hospitals, institutions and private homes, and several letters of thanks were received from patients.
