TERRITORIAL TRAINING
Role Of Units Defended (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 10. Territorial training was defended today by Brigadier C. L. Pleasants, Officer Commanding the Northern Military District, at a passing-out parade of the 23rd military training intake at Papakura Camp. “There has recently been criticism of territorial training within units,” said Brigadier Pleasants. “You have probably all read of it being a waste of time, but the people who say this are not in the true picture. “These territorial units are those which would go overseas in the event of an emergency and they must have annual summer training to keep them at a proper level of efficiency.” He told the trainees that it was not the Army’s intention that they should learn something new during every summer camp. The Army wanted to increase the efficiency of the units and this could best be done by territorial training. “What you are taught here.” he said, “is merely the basic knowledge which enables you to take a full and proper place in your respective units.”
