STANDING STARTS AT HALSWELL Forty-nine cars in sports, saloon, and racing classes gave the Canterbury Car Club's standing quartermile championship at Halswell on Saturday the distinction of having the largest number of entries since the club was formed 11 years ago. M. F. Stanton, holder of the New Zealand standing quarter-mile record, set a very fast time of 13.5 sec in his aircraft-engined Stanton Special. The car is fitted with a streamlined fibreglass body, with a prominent stabiliser fin at the rear. Next fastest time was 14.8755ec by P. M. Hoare, with his 4 C.L.T. Maserati. F. E. Sprague, of Timaru. recorded the third fastest time of 14.9955ec in his 2.9 Alfa Romeo. Then came F. Shuter, with 15.9 sec, in his 4C Maserati. Sports Cars J. Tutton recorded the fastest time for a sports car. His X.K.120X Jaguar covered the distance in 15.46 see. The best time for a closed car was 16.445ec, returned by F. D. Cantwell in a X.K. 140 Jaguar coupe. Results were:— Class B (5000-8000 c.c.).—-M. F. Stanton (Stanton Special), 13.5 sec. Class C (3000-5000 c.c.).—J. Tutton (XKI2OC Jaguar), 14.465ec, 1: F. D.
