The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) will open the newlyinstalled cobalt therapy unit at the Christchurch Public Hospital on Tuesday afternoon and that evening he will attend the ceremonial presentation of a mace from Christ Church, Oxford, to Canterbury University College. Mr Holland will return to Wellington by air on Wednesday morning.
Lord Tweedsmuir, a prominent British industrialist and son of the novelist, John Buchan, arrived in Auckland by air from London last night on a business visit. He will be in New Zealand for about a month.—(P.A.) Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., of Lower Hutt, has been appointed chairman and a member of the Local Government Commission for a further term of three years from April 1, 1957.
Mr H. F. Clarke has been appointed general manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia in succession to the late Mr Edward Cook. Mr Clarke, who has been deputy general manager since 1953, joined the bank in Auckland in 1916.—(P.A.)
The appointment of two professors of chemistry at Auckland University College has been announced by the college council. They are Professor L. H. Briggs, the present associate Professor of Chemistry at Auckland, and Dr. D. R. Llewellyn, lecturer in chemistry at University College, London. Dr. Llewellyn is a brother of Dr. F. J. Llewellyn, Rector of Canterbury University College.
Mr J. Holmes, of Ross, has been appointed a member of the Hokitika Harbour Board as representative of the electors of the Borough of Ross. Mr B. C. Wright has been appointed a member of the Conway Rabbit Board.
