£28,435 Paid For “Tyntesfield”
“The Press” Special Service BLENHEIM. March 8. A well-known Marlborough sheep and cattle-grazing property, “Tyntesfield,” in the Waihopi Valley, near Blenheim, was sold at auction in Blenheim today. The property, of 7021 was sold for £4 Is an acre—£2B,43s Is. The property was offered on account of the trustees of the estate of Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. Sir Heaton Rhodes acquired the property in 1939 and it had been managed for him since then by Mr K. Henshaw. The new owners are Messrs E. and H. E. Ensor, of “Rydal Downs,” Rangiora. They secured the property with a final rise of Is an acre. 150 At Auction About 150 persons attended the auction, but bidding was far from brisk, and the auctioneer had some difficulty in getting the sale started. There were no takers when he started at £5 an acre. When the auctioneer invited those present to start the bidding themselves, the first bid was £3 an acre. Bidding then rose by four bids of 5s up to £4 an acre. When the auctioneer invited rises of Is an acre, Mr H. E. Ensor made this final bid and the property was sold at £4 Is an acre. The property consists of 750 acres of flat, of which 350 acres have been cultivated, divided into 16 paddocks, and 6271 acres of hill country, subdivided into seven blocks. The whole property is watered by springs, creeks, and the Omaka river. The homestead comprises seven main rooms, including three bedrooms, and contains all modern conveniences. It is set in attractive, well-planted, and sheltered grounds which contain a swimming pool. Station Buildings The station buildings include a large, new woolshed housing 800 sheep, sheepyards and dip, cattleyards, a hay shed with a storage ofi 3000 bales, a blacksmith’s shop, and tractor, implement and fuel sheds. The property has usually wintered 3400 halfbred sheep including 1400 ewes and the lambing percentage has averaged 88 per cent. Last year 200 cattle were wintered on the property. The best of the arable flats grow good crops of wheat, oats, barley, peas, lucerne, and seeds. Aerial topdressing with lime and super is expected to add considerably to the carrying capacity of the property.
