AMATEUR ON POINT DUTY
TRAFFIC LIGHTS FAIL
Peter Hagerty, a 19-year-old clerk, stepped into the middle of the intersection of Colombo, High and Hereford streets at the peak of the midday rush yesterday to control the traffic when the automatic signalling system broke down.
The automatic lights, which had been upset by Thursday night’s electrical storm and other faults, failed about 12.15 p.m. Mr Hagerty, who was passing by, saw the traffic jam which was forming, and on his own initiative took over control. He was there for 15 minutes. Pedestrians smiled and some motorists were taken by surprise, but all obeyed his signals without hesitatation.
Policewoman D. Sergei saw him, went out to ask him if he needed any help, and left him to it when he replied that he was quite happy. Mr Hagerty came off point-duty when Traffic Officer A. N. Warren arrived. Mr Warren, who was on motor-cycle patrol, set the lights working again and thanked Mr Hagerty for his prompt assistance.
