"Whip And Carrot" Club

Peter Wells, the British high jumper, who is now living in Canterbury, belongs to the “Whip and Carrot Club.’’ Although this dub has a name like an English country inn, it is one reserved for high jumpers. Men members cf the club must have cleared more than 6ft and women sft 2in. The club membership also includes Miss Chudina, of Russia, the Australian, C. Porter, who came second in the Olympic high jump, and a number of outstanding United States jumpers. This dub is particularly progressive and, among other things, has ballet training sessions at the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, to strengthen leg muscles. Other clubs are “The Hurdlers’ Union,’’ “The Hammer Circle,’’ “Javelin Club,’’ and “Centipede Club,” ’ whose members are outstanding road walkers. These clubs often have a worldwide honorary membership, and all exist to encourage one particular event. They give coaching tri all those who show promise, and hold out-of-season competitions.
