The East Harbour club, members of which billeted these competitors at the New Zealand surf championships, rehearsed all week to make the introduction a memorable one. A first tape recording of the song as sung by Tansley was heard on the Friday by a highlycritical audience of Holger-Niel-sen experts, who included the chief instructor of the Wellington Surf Association (Mr K. Farey). After an initial period of shock —none of them are “rock ’n’ roll” addicts—they confessed to being very interested.
