One of the greatest surprises at the New Zealand surf championships at Lyall Bay, Wellington, last week-end, was the defeat of P. R. Garratt (Taylor’s Mistake) in the senior belt event and the individual surf race event, both of which titles Garratt held last year. Garratt is today one of Canterbury’s leading surfers and swimmers. He was a member of the New Zealand surf teams which visited Australia in 1954 and last year and is the Canterbury individual surf race titleholder. As a swimmer he holds the Canterbury 1650 yards, 440 yards and 230 yards titles, and holds the records for the first two of these events.
