KIWI ARRIVES BY AIR
Private Zoo Addition
A kiwi once again occupies a promient place in Mr H. R. H. Long’s zoo in Middleton. The bird arrived by air from Gisborne. The one-legged kiwi formerly owned by Mr Long died four months ago from the illness which commonly strikes this bird—a worm in a lung. His successor has two legs, but one toe is missing. Mr Long’s chances of owning a completely whole kiwi are fairly slim, because maimed birds only are permitted to be kept in captivity. Since last year the zoo has had several new inmates, including a red deer and two wallabies. Several more monkeys are expected to arrive this month. Mr Long has high hopes that a place will be filled by a small crocodile in the near future. At present he is negotiating for a permit to allow its entry into the country.
