ILLEGAL FIRES IN PAPARUA

COUNTY COUNCIL CONCERNED

Concern at the number of fires caused in the Paparua County by railway engines was expressed by members of the Paparua County Council at a meeting last evening. It was also reported that many property owners had not been complying with the fire restrictions and that a number of fires had been started during hours when there was a complete prohibition. The council decided to inform the Railways Department of the large percentage of fires caused by engines and to ask the department to make an annual contribution towards the costs of fighting these fires. On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided to charge persons unlawfully lighting fires with fire fighting costs in the event of the council’s unit being called. The chairman (Mr C. A.. Campion) said that there had been considerable concern in the county recently over the failure of some persons to comply with the Fire Emergency Regulations —in spite- of the dangerous conditions that had existed.
