TWO DROWNED IN NORTH
Dinghy Overturns In Bay (New Zealand. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 3. Two young men were drowned at Matauri bay between the Bay of Islands and Whangaroa about 1 a.m. yesterday. They were: James Brian Coghlan Griffiths, aged 20, only son of Mr and Mrs F. •C. Griffiths, of Kaikohe, and Reweti Paepae Hagger, aged 22. adopted son of Mr Kaaka Wiki, of Te Kao. The two men had been "at a friend’s house on the beach and had left about 1 a.m. It was thought they had gone home to bed. However, yesterday morning, a swamped dinghy was seen about a quarter of a mile off shore and it was then realised that they were missing. After a search, one body was a few hours later near a crayfish pot about 20 yards off the beach, and the other was found not far away about noon today. It was thought that they took the dinghy to get crayfish and the dinghy overturned.
SWIMMING HOLE TRAGEDY
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 3.
The son of a Kauana farmer, Vincent William Rabbitte, aged 13, was drowned in the Oreti river at Fern Hill, about 10 miles north of Winton, yesterday. The boy, in company with a party of other children, was baththing in a swimming hole when he got into difficulties and disappeared. He could not swim. The other children, none of whom could swim, ran a mile to the Rabbitte farm house to fetch help. Mr John Rabbitte, father of the drowned boy and a party of neighbours returned to the pool, one of the party dived in and searched the pool and the body was recovered about two hours later. PEDESTRIANS FATALLY INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) TAURANGA, March 3. Two elderly people died in hospital after being knocked down by a car on Cameron road, Tauranga, on Friday night. They were: Miss Bessie Edith Brain, of 73 Cameron road, aged about 72, and Mr Alfred Byron, of Roberts street, Tauranga, aged about 72. The driver of the car was Mr John Alfred Bidois, of Te Puna. ELDERLY WOMAN DIES IN HOSPITAL (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, March 3. An elderly woman died in the Waikato Hospital as a result of injuries received in a motor accident in Naylor street, Hamilton, shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday. She was Mrs Edith Helen Wild, aged 72, of Shakespeare street, Te Aroha.
