NATIONAL DAY OF WALES

CELEBRATION BY SOCIETIES Welsh societies in Christchurch celebrated the national day of Wales—St. David’s Day— at the week end. The celebrations included a Welsh song service and a church service. About 400 persons attended the Cambrian Society's annual service in the Christchurch Cathedral yesterday afternoon. The sermon was preached by the Rev. James Thomas, of Timaru. The service was conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Schollar, the choirmaster was Mr J. G. Parry and the organist was Mr B. F. Bicknell. A solo, “O Lord Most Holy.” was sung by Mr E. Rogers. On Saturday evening members attended a dinner. Welsh Society The Christchurch Welsh Society held a song service last evening. Mr R. J. Roberts presided and about 100 persons attended. The sermon was given by the Rev. F. O. Prosser. The Welsh lessons were read by Mrs W. J. Bouen and Mr T. R. Owen. The Welsh choir gave a hymn study and the conductor (Mr James Griffiths) sang a solo in Welsh. The traditional “noson lawn” or happy gathering was held on Saturday evening. The president (Mr R. Wynne Owen), speaking in Welsh and English, welcomed members and friends fro , m many parts of New Zealand and read greetings from other Welsh societies.
