CASHMERE HIGH SCHOOL
GOVERNORS’ FIRST MEETING The new board of governors of the Cashmere High School held its first meeting at the school on Saturday morning. Mr W. J. Cartwright, chairman of the Christchurch Post-primary Schools Council, welcomed the members and presided over the transfer of authority from the interim board. Officially handing’ over to the new board of governors its powers and responsibilities, Mr Cartwright said that the school was in good heart and that the work and enthusiasm of the headmaster (Mr T. H. McCoombs) were responsible for the spirit ol the school. On March 1, the official rollcounting day, the school had a roll of 426 pupils—24l boys and 185 girls—and was therefore entitled to “eighteen and ninetenths teachers” said Mr McCoombs. Allocated on that basis,, the school now had eighteen fulltime teachers and one part-time teacher, he said. Officers elected were:— ( Chairman, Mr D .Mackay (Governor-General’s appointee to the board); deputy-chairman, Dr. A. Crowther (Canterbury University College); secretary, Mr P. J. Halligan. Members of the board are: Mrs K. E. Blunt (parents of pupils) Mr R. K. Beauchamp (Canterbury Education Board), Dr. H. E. Field (Canterbury University College), Dr. R. S. Allen and the Rev. A. A. Brash (parents of pupils). Mrs T. R. Yandall was elected as an additional member of the board. Mr Mackay was elected as representative of the board on the Christchurch Post-primary Schools Council.
Mr Mackay, Dr. Crowther and Mrs Blunt were appointed to a buildings committee.
