CRICKET AUSTRALIA 344

F. J. Cameron’s 6 For 95

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. February 22. A day of free and high scoring by the Australians highlighted the first day’s play in the match against Otago at Carisbrook today. Australia was all out at 4.36 p.m. for 344. and at stumps Otago had scored 49 for the loss of one wicket.

Neil Harvey dominated the Australian innings with a brilliant and rapid 161. He batted easily and was untroubled by the Otago bowlers. At times he had to face a tightlypacked offside field, yet he had no difficulty in driving through the gaps.. The rate of scoring throughout the Australian innings was better than a run a minute. All the early batsmen, particularly Harvey and Simpson, were quick to hit anything loose. Harvey reached his 50 in 72 minutes and gradually increased his rate of scoring. He went from 100 to 150 in 31 minutes. He hit 24 hours and one six.

Simpson, who was second top scorer with 75 (seven fours), was steady and not unwilling to hit hard. The Harvey-Simpson partnership added 204 runs in 152 minutes. The other batting of note was a hard-hitting 26 by R. Benaud and N. C. O’Neill’s 21. Benaud pounded the tiring Otago bowlers, going for the runs at a time when the loss of his wicket was unimportant. He hit five hours.

The medium-fast bowler, F./ J. Cameron, was the outstanding Otago bowler He produced one of the best efforts of his career by taking

six wickets for 95, off 30 overs. Cameron had his best spell in the opening morning session, when he dismissed Favell, Craig, and Burge. Simpson was dropped off him, and Harvey also gave a chance. If these chances had been accepted, then he would have had the fine figures of five for 30. As it was, his three for 19 was impressive enough. Later in the innings, he kept a tight control on his length.

Alabaster Fails Brought back into the Otago team for his leg-spin bowling, A. M. Moir celebrated his return by taking four for 89. He was more accurate than J. C. Alabaster, the other leg spinner, and made the ball “bite” off the pitch.

Alabaster, who has been included in the New Zealand team, did not take a wicket, and gave away 66 runs. The Australians had no trouble in keeping him out. Otago lost W. S. Haig, one of the openers, four minutes after the start of the innings, but E. Watson and B. Sutcliffe batted well until stumps, when Sutcliffe was on 26 and Watson on 13. Scores:—
