RACING Appreciate For First Leg At Hokitika

The Orari-trained Appreciate is favoured for the Licensed Victuallers’ Handicap, the mam race and first leg of the double on the opening day of the Westland Racing Club’s meeting at Hokitika tomorrow.

Appreciate’s record in open company is one win, one unlucky third, and an unplaced performance in three starts. He suc-

cessfully made the step from hack class to open company at Kumara on January 12 when he narrowly beat Lucky Sal and easily beat six others over seven furlongs after losing ground at the start. His third was to Moilynn and Beauty Queen in the mile McIntosh Memorial Handicap at Hokitika two days later. He carried 8-0 including 61b overweight, and finished within a length of the winner after running wide on the home turn. Appreciate will meet Moilynn tomorrow' on 61b better terms, and Beauty Queen 11b better, so victory appears to be well within his reach. He will not have lost any favour because of his failure in the Midsummer Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting last Saturday. In that race he pulled hard in a trailing position when the pace was slack early and dropped out when it quickened for the last five furlongs.

Moilynn, in his present form, will probably fill one of the places. The step to open company is not expected to be too steep for Gay King, which will be one of the best light-weights if he gives one of his most generous efforts. At his last start, Gay King dead-heated with Treasure Pond over nine furlongs on the second day of the Vincent meeting. Two -days earlier, he ran Treasure Pond to half a Jength over a mile and a quarter. Form for Second Leg Eastern Star and Summer’s End are two form runners for the second leg, the Lakes Hack Handicap, but both may be troubled at this distance by Ngahuia, an improver’s fifth in the seven-furlong Post Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. Eastern Star and Summer’s End met in the Halswell Handicap at Riccarton. Eastern Star was in one of the pacemaking positions after half a mile, was passed by only the winner Teaka going to the furlong, but then weakened to sixth. She had 8-7, including a 71b allowance. Her carded weight tomorrow is 8-13. Summer’s End was a disappointing eleventh in the Halswell Handicap. Though he is in a weaker field at Hokitika, his chance does not look bright. De Bracey failed in the highweight at Riccarton but was a winner and a minor place-getter under those conditions at the Omakau meeting. Seascrape has been three times second and once third in as many

starts since he won a double at Omoto on December 3. One oi his successes that day yas over one mile and a quarter. Eastern Star was the runner-up when attempting to give Seascrape 121 b. the difference between them again tomorrow on caraed weights. Eastern Star has an earlier engagement in the Williams Hack Handicap, but over seven furlongs she may be shaded by Red Elm and the best of the others. Red Elm has had four wins in six starts this season and judged on her easy win over six furlongs under 9-1 at Hokitika on January 14, further success on the course is very likely. Red Elm is also engaged m the Miners’ Hack Handicap. She will be ridden by R. W. Gould. Jockey’s Appeal Successful

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 7. An appeal by the Matamata jockey, A. G. Colven, against the fortnight’s suspension imposed on him last Saturday by the Matamata Racing Club, was allowed by the Waikato District Committee in Hamilton today. At Matamata. Colven was found guilty of failing to ride Madam Khordene right out at the finish of the Railway Hack Handicap. The district committee upheld the appeal after hearing further evidence as to Madam Khordene’s peculiarities from her trainer, R. D. Samson, and D. M. Rich, who rode her on a previous occasion. Colven’s deposit was refunded.
