Sir, —N. M. Bells letter this morning is misleading. The “cobalt bomb.” or. more correctly, the radio-activated cobalt in ' the Theratron Cobalt Sixty beam therapy unit now being installed in Christchurch Hospital, is used exclusively in the service of mankind; mainly for the treatment of cancer. From recent observations in atomic energy establishments in England and Canada, I can state that the peaceful uses of atomic energy will, in the near future, entirely outweigh any possible misuse of such power in offensive war. The golden rule can be the law only in a Christianised age; meanwhile force must be employed where necessary to keep down the oppressor in every shape and form. Nothing in history has challenged the Biblical truth that “those that live by the sword shall perish by thf sword.” and it is certain that the nation that first uses nuclear power imp.operiy will suffer retribution too awful to contemplate.—Yours, etc.. CHARLES V. TRELOAR, A.R.A.C.I. (Australia). January 21, 1956. [We have no doubt that Mr Bell had a very different kind of cobalt bomb in mind.—Ed.. “The Press.”]
