REDUCTION IN IMPORTS
£26m Last Year (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 18.
A reduction of more than £26M in imports for the calendar year 1956, compared with the previous year, is shown in figures released tonight by the Minister of Customs (Mr E. H. Halstead).
The c.i.f. value of imports last year was £260,523,000, compared with £286,585,000 the previous year. Mr Halstead said that there had been reductions in 11 months last year compared with the corresponding months of the previous year, and that generally last year's figures indicated a more even spending on imports throughout the year. Last year there was a difference of £6.7M between the highest and the lowest import months, compared with a difference of £B.6M between the highest and lowest months of the previous year.
Mr Halstead said that figures for the calendar year’s exports were not yet available, but earlier figures for both imports and exports indicated a substantial improvement in the balance of trade position.
