TROTTING Sheffield’s Beauty Selected For Timaru

Sheffield’s Beauty, a close fifth in the Waimate Handicap, won by Elate, last Saturday, should go close to winning the Rosewill Handicap on the second day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke today. Sheffield’s Beauty was having her first start for the season last week, and she is certain to have benefited from the run. She will not be meeting such strong opposition today, and although she will give starts of up to 36 yards, she should be hard to beat. She is usually most reliable.

Most opposition to Sheffield’s Beauty may come from Cinderella, which last week was third to Diomedcs and Red Jenny in a similar race. Both the horses to finish in front of her will be absent this week and this should make her task easier. Cinderella has a useful turn of speed and should be prominent. The Southland four-year-old. 1 Misty, was solidly supported last week, but he broke several times and finished well back. In between breaks he showed plenty of ability, and he will only need to trot solidly to have prospects today.

The three-year-old. Superway. a sister to Supervise, has raced consistently lately and must again be respected. Dalmation. Silent Jim and Te Waihopi are others expected to race well.

Wimpy, which has had four successive placings in recent weeks, should graduate from maiden company in the Fairview Handicap. He was narrowly beaten by Rey Derby over two miles last week and he is expected to appreciate the shorter distance today. Compeer’s Prospects

The Attack three-year-old. Compeer, is another pacer expected to do well over the mile and a quarter Cdmneer failed in the Charles Cross Slakes on December 31, but paced a useful race for a maiden pacer. Two starts previously he was narrowly beaten by the promising Toucher at Rangiora. If he races up to that effort, he will be hard to beat. Utoss, a useful fourth in the two-mile race won by Loyal Piper at Ashburton last month, has had a chance to freshen up since then, and she will have more than an outside chance.

Buren. Pagliacci. Totem Pole and Maxwelton are expected to do best of the remainder.

Captain Free, a good third in his race at Motukarara at his most recent appearance, is selected to win the Tekapo Handicap. Captain Free is a good type of pacer and he should be a useful winner later.

Maharaja, which has had a ’win and two placings from his four starts so far, will be solidly supported. He has plenty of ability and should at least reach a place. Bonny Venture has at times raced well enough to have a chance here and with a little luck she could upset calculations.

Lord Argyle. Dismiss, Catamaran and Isidorus are others expected to add interest to the finish. The meeting between General Sandy. Caduceus, Tactician and Trueco in the Timaru Free-for-all will be the highlight of the day These four horses are among the best pacers in commission in New Zealand and should provide a thrilling contest. • If he races up tn his winning run in the New Zealand Pacing Championships al Addington in November, General Sandy should win. Caduceus. one of the best sprinters in the Dominion, will be the hardest to be’at, and he should fight out the finish with General Sandy. Cassado, Stylish George and Super Royal are selected to dispute the finish of the first leg of the double, the South Canterbury Handicap. Scottish Fair, Showdown and Quo Vadis may be the hardest for them to beat. Kyle Nurse will be a firm favourite for the second leg, the l ukaki Handicap. Most opposition io her may come from Starwise, Special Attack, Reality, Golden Chimes and Suzendy.
