Tanker Fleets Of World
(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 17. The tax-free tanker fleet operating under the flag of Liberia could be the largest in the world by 1960 if its present rate of growth continues, according to a semi-official analysis of world tanker tonnage.
Liberia’s tonnage—a wholly post-war development—increased by more than 1,000,000 tons deadweight during the second half of 1956 to 6,323.000 tons at the beginning of this year.
This is the largest increase by any country, and in total tonnage Liberia is only 743,000 tons behind Norway, which has the world's second largest tanker fleet. 2.193.000 tons behind the tanker tonnage operating under the British flag.
The British fleet is still the largest in the world and grew by 306.000 tons during the second half of 1956 to 8,516,000 tons. The Norwegian fleet increased by 167,000 tons to 7,066,000 tons, and the Panamanian fleet grew by 297,000 tons to 3,446,000 tons.
