DEFENCE
Sir.—l thank John Burbridge for the information, and would like some more. During his army career, was Major-General Smedley D. Butler ever called on to participate in the mass slaughter of prisoners of war as carried out by the Russians on the unfortunate Poles at Katyn Forest? Was he ever asked to shoot down defenceless civilians who objected to their country’s form of govern- • ment as did Russian troops in the Ukraine? Was he at any time asked to murder people in a neighbouring country as did the Russians when the Hungarians attempted to remove their minority government and escape from oppressive Russiain imperialism? If so. the Major-General must have described his feelings. What did he say?—Yours, etc.. VOLGA BOATMAN. January 17, 1957.
