TAKAPO HOUSE
Sir, Apparently a few people still wish to live in the past with our friend Mr Burnett. 1 am firmly of the opinion that a licensed hotel would be an asset to the district. If a few tourists were to stay at the hotel, the local council might even be shamed into cleaning up the unsightly mess of broom and partlydemolished buildings that still spoil what could be a beauty spot. If any runholder has the money to spare to buy hotels for the sole purpose of allowing the licence to lapse, I think it is time he went and sat at the top of Burke’s Pass and studied the wording on the memorial. There he would be advised of a much more sensible and useful way to spend his money.—Yours, etc., TUSSOCK HAPPY. January 16, 1957.
