Lady Kilmuir’s Work
SUSAN VAUGHANI All members of the Conservative Party who have worked with Viscountess Kilmuir at the party headquarters will be pleased to learn of her award in the New Year Honours List. She has now become a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Of all the wives of Britain’s leading politicians, I cannot think of one who works so hard behind the scenes. As the Lord Chancellor’s wife, she has to attend and organise numerous social functions. In addition. she does her own housework and part-time duties as chairman ot the National United Nations Association Committee which helps children. From 1950-54. she was also vice-chairman of the Conservative Party, putting in a fiveday week, helping to run the great party machine. Lady Kilmuir is the sister oi the actor Rex Harrison and the daughter of a Liverpool family. She was 19 when, in 1925, she married Lord Kilmuir, then a young barrister from Scotland. Since then, she has been close at his side throughout his brilliAt election times, Lady Kilmuir has supported her husband by canvassing and addressing meetings.
