Fibreglass Lifeboat

A ship’s lifeboat made of fibreglass is an unusual feature on board the New Zealand Shipping Company’s cargo vessel, Rakaia. now in Auckland. It is being carried as an experiment, and it it proves successful there is a possibility that other ships of the line may be equipped with similar lifeboats. Outwardly, the fibreglass boat is not much different from a normal lifeboat. If is 25fl 9in long, and the hull has been moulded in two halves on an aluminium keel. Advantages claimed for the boat are its lightness, making for easier handling, and the fact that it needs no repainting.
