CROQUET TOURNAMENT AT HAMILTON
Touring Side To Play The Rest
(New Zeatana Press Association) HAMILTON, January 17. The New Zealand croquet tournament will begin at the Claudelands Lawns tomorrow with a match between New Zealand representatives and the Rest, in line for selection when the 1956 team to tour England was chosen.
The New Zealand team will not contain all members of the touring side. The invitation to play was declined by A. G. F. Ross Hastings) and Captain and Mrs McKenzie Smart (Gisborne), C. Watkins and Mrs Watkins (Hastings), who were taken ill during the tour, are not yet tit lor competitive play. Another who could not accept the invitation was Mrs G. Rowling (Nelson), who accompanied her husband on the tour and played in the last two matches. She was a 1950-51 representative.
Miss 1. Wainwright (Hamilton). G. Rowling (Nelson), and W. H. Kirk and Mrs Kirk (Christchurch) expect to play. C. Bryan (Lower Hutt) and A. D. Heenan (Wellington), who were New Zealand representatives in 1950-51, will complete the team. The Rest v. ill comprise Mrs ‘ M. Mitchell (Napier), . woman’s champion of New Zealand last season; Mrs C. T. Wadsworth (Auckland), runner-up in the 1956 open championship; Mrs W. L. Martin 'Christchurch), Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt), and the New Zealand doubles title-holders, 11. Ford and Mrs L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe). Championship play will start on Saturday. The first event will be the doubles. Mcsdames Jarden and Rowling will not be defending their titles.
