RACING Yahabeebe Favoured In Trentham Classic

With Yahabeebe and Ganymede to represent his stable, the Ellerslie trainer, M. E. Ritchie, appears to hold the key to the result of the Wellington Stakes at Trentham tomorrow. Yahabeebe and the two-year-old Ganymede are fillies with great brilliance.

Ganymede has won four of her five races for Sir James Fletcher and Mr J. C. Fletcher, and really established her class by winning the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie when off-colour and after her rider had lost his whip during the race. She is by Gold Nib from Goddess of Fire, and could be the most likely to take up the winning record of two-year-olds in the race where Ray Ribbon left off three years ago. Coleridge and Hush Money, the last two winners, were both three-year-olds. It is generally considered that strongest opposition for Yahabeebe and Ganymede will come from Barobar, a fast Fair s Fair I filly, owned by the Takanini trainer, F. Smith. Barobar beat; Yahabeebe with ease in the Wel-j lesley Stakes at Trentham last season. This was one of her four wins as a two-yepr-old.

Yahabeebe just as decisively beat Barobar in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, the Royal Stakes end Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. Barobar's Record But the record of Barobar at Trentham in her first season and again as a three-year-old has gained for her many intending supporters. At the Wellington spring meeting she was nosed out of the honours in the Shorts Handicap by the light-weight Ambition. Barobar carried 9-2. and the winner had 271 b less on a heavy track. In the Desert Gold i Stakes. Barobar was the only: filly to offer opposition of any! worth to her brilliant stablemate.. Passive.

Lorica will probably be the best of the other three-year-olds. He should be one of the fastest finishers. judged on his fourth after » slow start in the Wellington Guineas, and an easy win against the open sprinters at Otaki on December 8. Most of the two-year-olds are untested at the distance, but the Riccarton pair. Coq d’Or and Her Ex. should not be troubled by the distance. Coq d’Or put up an exceptional gallop to win the CJ.C. Welcome Stakes, which was his first race. That, rather than his weak performance on the final day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, indicates his true ability. The class may not’ be too rich for this powerful galloper in the Wei- 1 lington Stakes.

Wellington Cup Yeman, Somerset Fair, and the' Orari-trained Column are expected to dominate the finish of the £lO.OOO Wellington Cup. Somerset Fair has not been tested over the distance, but if he has the necessary stamina, he will overshadow the best of the others for galloping ability.

Column would need to show little if any improvement on his New Zealand Cup second to battle his way into the finish. He is well seasoned, hardy, and more versatile than many of the others in' this field. Yeman won a fast-run Auckland Cup in the manner of a true stayer, and he cannot be overlooked in his attempt to complete s double that has eluded many good stayers.

If the track is firm Cardigan, the New Zealand Cup third, and Llanisfair, a consistent minor place-getter over two miles, will probably give the finish a good deal of interest. Cardigan will be ridden by the successful Australian jockey, Neville Sellwood, who has a great record on stayers in Australia. Sellwood won the 1955 Melbourne Cup on Toparoa, which will run in the Wellington Cup. V. J. Sellars will ride Toparoa tomorrow.

Scratched: Mary Gilpin. CAMP HACK HANDICAP, Of £9OO. One mile.

Royal Zorra. Summersette. and Lochie are a favoured trio for the Telegraph Handicap, the second leg of the double. Lochie is expected to improve on anything he has done lately if the track is firm, but Copenhagen will sup plant him in favour if the ground eases.

Royal Zorra was a rather unlucky second to Warwick in the Nainai Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Wellington spring meeting. She had luck against her. also, in the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, but stylishly won the Members’ Handicap on the final day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. Selections:—
