WOOL SALE AT AUCKLAND

Fleeces Up Id On Wanganui

(New Zeaiana Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 16.

Prices for good style fleece wools were up to Ijd per lb above values at Wanganui at the opening of the second main Auckland sale of the season today. For medium crossbred fleeces and oddments the market was dearer by about |d per lb. All wools were in very keen demand and the average price was estimated at 51d a pound, or Hd better than the actual average at the first Auckland sale in November. This would bring about £74 for the average bale. The total offering for the twoday sale is 46,479 bales, and of this 24,400 bales were disposed of in just over six hours’ selling today. The offering was mainly erossbred fleece and a proportion of halfbred wool, a small selection of lambs’ wool and the usual assortment of oddments. Opening strongly before a full bench of buyers, the sale sustained its tone throughout the day. Values are still below the peak reached on the first day of the Invercargill sale last month, but the market appears to be rising. Woollen mills are still slightly anxious as a result of the international situation, but to a lesser extent than in November and December.

Continent Active Competition was fairly well spread with buyers representing Continental interests well to the fore and Bradford operating within tighter limits. One buyer said that this did not mean that a large proportion of the offering would not end up in Bradford in a few months’ time. Japan came into the market for a selection of fine Southdown wools but as usual showed no interest in crossbred wools. Most of the offering showed the effects of the wet growing season, with discoloration particularly evident among bellies and pieces and some short fleece wool. The get-up of many of the lines came in for criticism from some buyers. Finer hogget wools and finer crossbred ewe wools commanded the most attention but such was the strength of the sale throughout that the best pieces were bringing 47d and bellies close to 40d. Top price of the day was reached in the last 10 minutes of selling when 70d was paid for a binned line of three bales of fine Down cross hogget wool. Another binned line of fine Down cross wool made 69d and two other lines of Sqpthdown and Southdown cross made 68d. One of these came from the Frankton property o. Mr J. A. Bagiist. Several lines of fine crossbred brought 63d to 65d.
