NUCLEAR POWER EXPANSION
Britain’s Plans
(N .Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, January 15. Plans for a big expansion in the United Kingdom nuclear power programme would be announced towards the end of this month, the “Financial Times” said today. The “Financial Times” said that the announcement would be one of the first actions of the new Minister of Power (Sir Percy Mills). The “Financial Times” said that the expansion was approved before the formation of the new Cabinet and involved the construction by 1965 of between 16 and 19 nuclear power stations costing between £600,000,000 and £ 700.000,000. These stations -would have a generating capacity of between 6000 and 7500 megawatts of electricity equivalent to 16.000.000 to 20.000,000 tons of coal. The “Financial Times” said that this compared with the Government forecast in February, 1955. of 12 nuclear power stations with a generating capacity of 1000 to 2000 megawatts, costing £300,000,000. The expansion would mean that by 1965 installed nuclear generating capacity should amount to between 40.000 and 65.000 megawatts. producing electric power equivalent to between 100,000,000 and 150,000,000 tons of coal a year.
