ADDINGTON MARKET Big Store Lamb Entry; Fat Steer Prices Advance

Markets were sound for most fat stock at Addington market yesterday with prices at least firm and in a number of cases better. With a short entry, fat cattle prices for once showed some improvement with best quality steers advancing by about £2 to £3. In the fat sheep section young wethers showed some improvement from the average rates ruling last week, and heavy wethers were also better by 3s to 4s, but ewes were somewhat unsteady with rates varying from par to a shade easier. Fat lamb prices gained by 2s to 3s with a light yarding. Almost 12,000 store lambs were yarded and these met a ready sale at firm prices. Top price was 695.

STORE SHEEP

Of the yarding of 14,427 store sheep, 11,941 were lambs. The entry this week was hardly up to the quality of last week, as it contained more backward sorts and also more hill country lambs, but there was a good representation of high quality forward lambs.

For the best of the big selection of wether lambs values were perhaps about Is a head better. Medium sorts continued to sell at about late rates, while smaller lambs may have been a shade easier—about Is to 2s.

Ewe lambs showing quality and size were in strong demand, but otherwise they made values no better than wether lambs of similar size.

Top price in the section was 69s paid for the top pen of 58 from the annual draft of 1105 SouthdownRomney cross lambs from the estate of R. D. Bradley (Charteris Bay). These lambs, which average 60s 4d a head—lls 7d better than last year—came forward in excellent condition, but if anything they were hardly as good as last year, no doubt because of the lush feed that has been a feature of the season. Apart from the top pen, 575 realised 645, 281 56s 6d, and 191 52s 6d.

Estate T. G. Morris and D. Morris (Overshiels, Cheviot) were paid 68s 6d for their top pen of Corriedale wether lambs, and for Corriedale ewe lambs the Dillon Davies Trust (Kekerangu) received up to 675. Best lambs sold from 60s to 695, good 56s to 595, average 50s to 555, and' others 40s to 48s.

A few pens of useful farmers’ oneyear ewes were included in the adult sheep section. These sold up to about 50s for reasonable sheep with the balance making from 25s to 40s. A good demand existed for young wethers and the balance—mainly three and four-shear—made up to late rates. These met a ready demand on account of the favourable feed position. Last year they were •practically unsaleable. Sales included:—

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., sold: on account of H. R. Davison and Sns (Balmoral) : 28 two-tooth Corriedale wethers at 60s; J. T. FAT LAMBS With a very short yarding of fat lambs and an improved export schedule, prices showed a good appreciation. The entry was only 340, compared with 700 last week and this was at least in part due to the fact that some lambs yarded in the fat pens last week would have sold beter in the store pens. On an average prices were better by 2s a head, with best quality showing the most pronounced rise and being about 3s in advance of late rates. The whole of the offering was absorbed by the trade. Top price of the day was 79s Id for three outstanding Romneys from M. A. Smith, Russells Flat, who also sold two at 73s Id. Values were:— Extra prime lambs, 70s Id to 79s Id. Values for young wethers advanced about 2s to 3s on the general average of last week’s sale, and the market was able to absorb more of the heavy wethers than it has been able to do recently, and for these two prices were better by 3s to 4s. The entry of ewes was comparatively light, but the sale had an erratic tedency at times being fully up to last week's rates, but at other times there was a slight easing for all except very choice quality. Wethers sold up to 83s Id for the tops of a line of 15 from J. C. Bruce, of Hororata. and the top sale for ewes was made on account of A. Phillpot. Waikari. at 42s Id. This was because of a smaller offering, which totalled 313 head, compared with 566 last week. All classes of steers were better with quality sorts, which showed the most marked advance, up by £2 to £3 a head. Heifers were only fractionally stronger, and cows still meet a dull market with values unchanged. Top price for steers was £3B 7s 6d for a heavy-weight Friesian from T. J. R. Macartney (Tai Tapu). In these circumstances it was difficult to detect a definite trend in values, but the market did appear to show more signs of life than at recent sales and values were estimated to be up by 20s or 30s, with 15-monrhs-old cattle selling particularly well. Quotable sales were made as follows:—on account clients, 7 two-vear-old Hereford cross steers at £l7 is, 8 two and three-year-old Friesian steers at £l6 18s 6d, Aberdeen Angus 18 month steers at £l3 18s bd, another line of. the same breed at £l2 18s 6d: small lines of 18-montns Shorthorn steers at £l4 18s, and two and a half-year-old Shorthorn, steers at £l7 13s 6d, and seven Aberdeen Angus heifers at £l2 18s 6d.

DAIRY CATTLE About 20 head of mixed quality, including one or two backward springers, faced buyers in the dairy cattle section. The sale was a good one. with values fully firm on last week’s rates for anything suitable for town supply requirements. Top price was paid for a registered Friesian cow, which realised 45 guineas. One other Friesian cow sold at £4l, and two good Friesian heifers made £4l and £46. The balance of the cows sold from £l6 to £3O, and the remaining heifers from £22 to £35. VEALERS The yarding of veal was a very short one. It was about 100 head below an average size recent selection. As a result, runners advanced by about £2 a head and calves were up by about 30s a head, with small good butchers’ calves in very short Good runners realised up to £22. medium runners up to £lB, and rough to £l5; good suckers to £l6, good small calves to £l2, and rough calves up to £ 7 . FAT PIGS There was not such a heavy yarding of fat pigs. As there were only three trucks of bacon from outside districts. In the porker section for best quality prices rose by 4s to 6s on last week’s sale. The bacon market consisted of about the same number of head as last week. The sale was as good and inclined to rise 2s to 3s for the better quality pigs. Over-fat and over-weight pigs were again unsaleable, and in the opinion of buyers and auctioneers, farmers had wasted their time in carrying their pigs on to this stage. There was a much heavier yarding of choppers and prices receded by 10s to 15s on last week’s good sale. Values were:— Light porkers, £6 17s 6d to £7 8s 6d. Medium porkers, £7 13s 6d to £8 Is 6d. Heavy porkers, £8 6s 6d to £8 19s 6d. Choppers, £8 Is to £l2 18s 6d. Light baconers, £9 13s 6d to £lO Is 6d. Medium baconers, £lO 3s 6d to £lO 16s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll Is 6d to £l2 5s 6d. Store Pigs There was a much smaller yarding in the store pig section, which consisted mainly of small weaners. Prices for the weaners receded by 6s to 10s, owing to the lateness of the season. Only -two pens of large stores were yarded, and these met with an excellent sale. Four sows, with litters, made from £25 to £3O. Values were:— Small, weaners, 62s to 725. Best weaners, 75s to 85s. Slips, 90s to 105 s. Large stores, to £7 Bs. BURNSIDE (New Zeaiana Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 16. In contrast with the large offerings of last week, the entries of all classes of fat stock at the Burnside sale today were definitely smaller, with a general, all-round improvement in values. The sharpest rise of the day was in the fat sheep section. The entries generally were less than half last week's, and in some sections there were practically no entries at all.

Fat lambs were in short supply. The number offering, which was well handled by the trade, brought prices well above the schedule rates. The quality of the fat lambs forward could be classed as only average. The offering of fat sheep totalled about 1500, compared witn 3600 last week. There was a sharp rise in all classes of sheep, wethers showing an improvement of from 10s to 17s, and ewes an increase on last week’s values of 7s to Bs. Young sheep were in very short supply, the greater bulk of the offering being made up of ewes and older wethers. The top price for young sheep today was 90s, as against 84s last week, and for prime wethers 86s, as against 69s last week.
