South Africa 116 For Four (Rec. 11 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 27. South Africa had lost four wickets for 116 runs in the first test match against England at Johannesburg, soon after the third day’s play began today. When Goddard was bowled by Statham, South Africa had only added one run to the overnight score of 91. Then Bailey quickly took the wickets of Keith and McLean. Frank Tyson was unable to play today as he has tonsillitis. England is now left with four recognised bowlers—Bailey and Statham and Jim Laker and John Wardle. At stumps on the second day. yesterday. South Africa had lost one wicket for 91 in reply to England’s first innings total of 268. England’s batsmen took 9hr lOmin to make their 268. Only the opener, Peter Richardson, with 117, and Colin Cowdrey, with 59, proved troublesome to the South African attack. Richardson stayed at the wicket for eight hours and three-quarters. The rapid dismissal of Insole after Cowdrey’s departure with only 8 added to his overnight score, killed England’s chance ©f a high total. Goddard played a big part in South Africa’s fighting performance. His spin bowling claimed three wickets and he held three catches. Men Killed By Terrorists
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 27.
Communist terrorists yesterday shot dead eight members of the 6th Battalion, Malay Regiment, including a British staff sergeant, and wounded three others in an ambush in central Malaya, an official Government spokesman said today. The spokesman said that the ambush took place on the Ben-tong-Manchis road in Pahang state. He said that the soldiers were covering a vehicle which drove into a ditch when the 1 terrorists attacked.
