Five Thoroughbreds Destroyed By Youths
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, December 27.
The bodies of five young thoroughbred horses were found by Mr D. C. Aubrey, a horsebreeder, of “Cattle Flat” station,; Wanaka, on his property this morning. They had been wounded by bullets and, maddened by pain and the glare < f car headlamps or spotlights, stampeded over a cliff. Four of the horses were two-year-old colts, and one a three-year-old colt. All were valuable. Earlier last year, four of Mr Aubrey’s purebred jumpers were shot by a youth. Mr Aubrey said that sorties by “spotlight shooters.” mainly youths in old cars, had frequently been made to his and neighbouring properties. The youths went withI
out permission, supposedly hunting deer, and “shoot at anything with eyes.” Mr Aubrey has lost sheep, cattle, and foals over the last few months. Farmers at Makarora, Hunter Valley and other parts are also reported to be extremely worried by indiscriminate shooting.
