SHORTAGE OF BANANAS
SUPPLY DOWN BY 25 PER CENT.
“The Press’’ Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. There will be a shortage of bananas over the next few months, said the chairman of Fruit Distributors. Ltd (Mr H. Turner). Accompanied by the managing director of the firm (Mr R. Walker), Mr Turner returned from a 10-day visit to Fiji and Samoa to discuss future banana supply with growers, shippers, and Government officials.
Mr Turner said he had been concerned that quantities of bananas imported into New Zealand had dropped greatly. The supply for 1956 had been down by nearly 25 per cent, on last year.
The weather was largely responsible. In Fiji floods and in Samoa dry weather had affected production. Dry weather had also hit Samoan yam and taro growing and islanders were cooking green bananas for eating, further reducing production. “We rely on the Pacific Islands for our bananas,” said Mr Turner, “and it is very easy for them to under-produce.” “Constant replanting will help build up the supply. However, future supply cannot be guaranteed and further discussion will be necessary. It is hoped that the position will improve after a few months,” he said.
