MANAWATU RIVER CANOE RACE
PALMERSTON NORTH TO FOXTON
(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 27. A Woodville combination, N. Longman and P. Currie, won the second stage and handicap section of the Palmerston North to Foxton river boat race today. Their time for the stage from Shannon to the mouth of the Manawatu river was 2hr 49min. T. Dooney and L. Hastie, who had the fastest time in the first stage from Palmerston North to the Shannon bridge, secured fastest time for the whole 55 miles of the course—7hr 11.5 min. These two were the back-markers for the final stage and left the Shannon bridge 70min after the limit men. Conditions were almost perfect for the second stage in spite of rain, and a slight tail wind aided the canoeists. The only difficult section was the straight towards the finish. The incoming tide made the river choppy, and the canoeists had extreme trouble in keeping the kayaks free from water.
