CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS

SEA SUBMERGES VEHICLES

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 27.

A chain of unfortunate consequences was begun when Mr A. Hodgson, a Te Awamutu garage proprietor visiting Glenbrook beach, Waiuku, used his truck to tow a boat to the incoming tide this afternoon. The truck stuck in the sand and resisted all efforts at recovery. Mr D. Yorke, a farmer at Glenbrook, took his new tractor to assist and this also stuck in the sand. All holidaymakers on the beach arrived with ropes, planks, and chain to drag the vehicles out. The chain broke and some 25 people fell in the sea. Mr R. McLaren, a Glenbrook farmer, arrived on the scene to give assistance but was prevented by «.he rising tide. The vital parts of both truck and tractor were dismantled and taken to safety. Then the sea submerged both vehicles. WOMAN FATALLY INJURED THROWN OUT OF CAR (New Zealand Press Association) WAIPUKURAU, December 27. A young speedway driver was fatally injured when the midget car he was driving crashed through the wooden fence surrounding the track, during the final race of the programme at the Rotorua showground last night. He was: Peter Gilbert Penny, aged 22, a motor mechanic, of Amohau street, Rotorua. Several cars were bunched closely as they rounded a bend in the track, a few yards past the starting pits. Apparently one of the cars momentarily went out of control and struck the wall, then bounded off on to the track. , Mr Penny’s car was hit by the other as it rebounded off the wall. The impact put Mr Penny's car, in turn, out of control, and another racer, approaching from the rear, could not avoid hitting him. Mr Penny was taken to the Rotorua Public Hospital, where he died of internal injuries.
