RACING Watch And Wait Wins At Washdyke

Watch and Wait yesterday won the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Christinas Handicap for the second successive year. The Christmas Handicap was the main race and first leg of the double on the opening day of the South Canterbury club’s summer meeting at Washdyke. Honours of the race were soundly earned by Watch and Wait, a five-year-old Count Rendered mare owned by Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane. Culverden. and trained at Riccarton by C. G. Humphries. This was Watch and Wait’s first win for the season, but in her present form she should soon improve her record. She struck a solid patch of form at this time last year. After winning at Washdyke she won the Waikouaiti Cup and the Wellington Racing Club’s Anniversary Handicap in successsive starts. Loyal Chief, the runner-up in the Dunedin Cup last Saturday, was a firm favourite for the Christmas Handicap. He ran into the lead inside the first furlong, shook off challenges from Keep Time and Humber Hawk going to the furlong, but went under by a long neck to Watch and Wait. Another favourite, lone, was close to victory in the second leg. the Fairlie Hack Handicap. She held a slight lead at the halffurlong, but was caught by Red Elf, a four-year-old Massowa mare, trained at Orari by L. H. Pratt for Mrs R. Smith. The Watch and Wait-Red Elf combination carried 229 5s tickets and paid £247 19s for £l. The Fair lie Hack Handicap provided one of a number of spectacular finishes. Racing of a high standard was done on a firm track. There was a good attendance. The on-eourse totalisator turnover was £30,268. including £3093 10s on the double, compared with £33,336 10s last year. Favourite Beaten Watch and Wait wore down the favourite. Loyal Chief, well inside the last furlong of the Christmas Handicap, and won by a long neck. Keep Time was three lengths back, third, and was unchallenged for that position. Loyal Chief ran clear in the lead early in the race, and Humber Hawk dropped into the trailing position, with Keep Time alongside. Royal Voyage followed clear of County Fermanagh, which was just in front of Watch and Wait. There were no changes in that order from the mile to the five furlongs. Going to the half-mile. C. T. Wilson took Watch and Wait forward two places to be behind Humber Hawk and Keep Time, which were still trailing Loyal Chief. Keep Time closed on Loyal Chief near the home turn, and Watch and Wait joined in soon after. They went to the furlong practically abreast, but Keep Time weakened soon after. Loyal Chief battled hard to hold his lead, but Watch and Wait had the stronger finish. Keep Time was two lengths clear of Humber Hawk. Then there was a length to Lucky Sal. the tail-ender for a good way Shoal was three lengths back sixth, weakening after moving forward several places on the outer near the home turn. Next were County Fermanagh, Mundus, and Royal Voyage. Second Leg A close two-horse struggle for the major honours and a magnificent finish for third made the Fairlie Hack Handicap the outstanding race of the day. Red Elf nosed the favourite lone out of the lead in the last few strides. Bagatelle finished brilliantly for third three-quarters of a length back, and heads separated the next four to finish—Barbara’s Treasure, Looking Forward, Gay King, and Appreciate. lone and Gay King were racing abreast in the lead when the field settled down, and R J. Skelton had Red Elf alongside Keel in a trailing position. La Fontaine, Appreciate, Water Boy and Barbara’s Treasure were close at hand, but Bagatelle was a long way from the lead after a slow start.

lone had Gay King’s measure at the furlong, but Red Elf was then challenging strongly. The Orari-trained Massowa mare responded well under a hard ride

and mastered lone when the post was very near. Bagatelle finished brilliantly for third, and Barbara’s Treasure and Looking Forward were running on for fourth and fifth just ahead of the weakening Gay King and Appreciate. Water Boy was next clear of Post, which lost ground early after being close to the lead for a time. Keel, cne of the slow beginners, was next and La Fontaine, which was close up to the straight, finished at the rear. Well-earned Win Motueka recorded a wellearned win for Mr J. McG. Inglis in the Pukaki High-weight Handicap. He followed Super Corn into the last furlong and gamely sustained his run to inch his way into the lead in the last few strides. Motueka was one of the best beginners, but Super Corn went on alone in the lead going to the six furlongs where Motueka and Leprechaun were following just ahead of Dart Away, which was moving forward. Dart Away was closest to the pacemaking Super Corn coming to the home turn, but he was beaten well outside the furlong Motueka and Leprechaun led the chase after Super Corn at the furlong. Motueka had the strongest run. and it gave him victory in the last few strides. Brown Baron, six places back at the three furlongs, ran on well for third a length back. He had half a length to spare from Glen Carron, which was fourth on the home turn. Leprechaun weakened to fifth a length back. Then there was a length and a half to Merrimayes. and a gap to Dart Away. The favourite. Prince Filou, was eighth. He was the tailender for a good way, started a long run round the field, but ran very wide on the home turn. Demand bled during the race and was pulled up.
