Record Toll In U.S.

Final figures were incomplete, but latest reports showed 851 persons had died in accidents between 11 p.m. on Friday and 5 a.m. on Wednesday, including 687 on the roads. Forty-seven died in fires and 117 in miscellaneous accidents. The former record for all accidents in any holiday period was 789. set in the four-day’Christmas week-end of 1951. The previous record for deaths on the highways was 609 for Christmas of last year. The final highway toll, experts said, might reach 700. The full count for the accepted holiday period normally was not completed until 10 to 12 hours after the midnight deadline. The National Safety Council had estimated that 660 persons would die in traffic accidents during this Christmas period. The council estimated that some 55.000.000 cars would be on the streets and highways during the holiday.
