OFFICER’S FATE

Conflicting Reports

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BEIRUT, December 25.

A British member of Parliament. Colonel Cyril Banks, said on his return to Beirut today from Cairo that President Nasser had told him last night that SecondLieutenant Anthony Moorhouse had “lost his life at the hands of those who had captured him.” Colonel Banks had gone to Cairo in the hope of bringing back Lieutenant Moorhouse, who had been captured by Egyptians at Port Said earlier this month. Just before the last British troops left Port Said on Saturday night. Lieutenant-General Sir Hugh Stockwell, the Allied commander at Port Said, announced that Lieutenant Moorhouse was “alive and well” and had been seen by a United Nations emergency force officer.

The officer’s father, Mr F. G. Moorhouse, said tonight when told of Colonel Nasser’s report: “We are in a maze. We do not know what to believe, but we are praying for the best. We have not had any word from the War Office about this and we must wait until some authoritative statement is issued.”
