Loyal Chief—Ione For Washdyke

Loyal Chief, in the Christmas Handicap, and lone, in the Fairlie Hack Handicap, will probably be the most popular combination with doubles investors at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting which opens at Washdyke today. Loyal Chief has two wins and five seconds to his credit from eight starts thus season, and his effort to beat all but Relinquish in the Dunedin Cup last Saturday indicated that the Royal Chief six-year-old will be capable of fully extending the best of his rivals. With Writer, Canon, Desert Cloud, and Sir Anthony—all scratched yesterday —missing from the field, Loyal Chief may find his strongest opponents the Riccartontrained candidates, Keep Time and Tess. Other capable galloners in the field which could add interest to the finish include Watch and Wait, Royal Warrant. Mundus, and Humber Hawk. Pennant. Aquarius. Sturmer. and Red Peak have dropped out of the second leg. the Fairlie Hack Handicap, in which lone, Kansas, and Bagatelle are expected to dominate the finish. lone, winner of the Spring Novice Handicap at Trentham in October, and a creditable seventh after covering extra ground m the Seymour Handicap at the New Zealand Cun meeting, would only need to begin smoothly from the No. 1 barrier position today to test most of her rivals, Kansas' and Bagatelle are both capable sprinters, and of those nearer the bottom of the handicap Cheyenne may do best.

Darenal's Chances Robes, Keep Clear, and The Mint have been scratched for tne Juvenile Handicap, in which Vivien Leigh and Darenal appear to have the brightest prospects. There are no defections in the Stafford Stakes No. 1. for which Pink Rose, Heath, and Pelota will be a favoured trio, but Boissier Boy, Bonny Pippin. Foretold. Tonka, and Sir Edwin will be missing from the Stafford Stakes No. 2, in which Willie Wolseley, a creditable third after a slow beginning at Wingatui last Saturday, is expected to prevail. Other scratchings posted yesterday were Relinquish and Rio Negro (Pukaki High-weight), and Cuban (Levels Hack Handicap). The weather in Timaru has been fine and the track will be m excellent order.
