Yeman Brilliantly Wins The Auckland Cup

“The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, December 26. Favoured with a run on the inside for the last three furlongs the Takanini gelding, Yeman, won the honours in the Auckland Cup on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting today. It was his sixth try this season further than a mile and he won a mile and a quarter race at Avondale last Saturday. Yeman ke>t on the inside from the start running near the back for the first half mile and seventh or eighth from the five furlongs. He dashed through an opening beginning the last two furlongs and won by a length and threequarters. Straight Lead failed to sustain a big run from the back and was second by two lengths from Llanisfair. The race was smoothly run and each of the most favoured candidates had its chance. Yeman finished in 3min 20 2-5 sec, four fifths of a second outside the record for the race made by Rev in 1952 and equalled by Arawa and Tesla in 1954 and 1955. The double. Yeman and Supreme Court paid £7l 5s for £l. Supreme Court was bracketed with Belle Rosa. Both horses are trained by V. B. Johnson at Takanini. Won All The Way Supreme Court won all the way showing great speed and finishing with two lengths to spare from Copernicus and Royal Crescent third. Royal Crescent was the unlucky runner missing the start and making a brilliant late run into the minor money. She was the each way favourite on the machine and the off course doubles substitute. The Ellerslie two-year-old filly Ganymede won the Great Northern Foal Stakes gamely in a battling finish with Attila. Ganymede was slightly better than an even money proposition and Attila was at only slightly longer odds. The weather was fine and sunny and the going fast. The attendance was 36,392 compared with 37,159 on the first day last year. The totalisator on the course handled £321,669 5s (including £49,446 15s on doubles) against £360,423 10s last year. Cup Running Column, Alonsun, Black Amber. Coleridge, Zohov, Hollywood and Big Blow were prominent in the rush for positions in the early stage of the cup. Straight Lead and Swift Gold were hard pressed and they dropped quickly behind. At the end of half a mile Alonsun led by seven lengths from Column, Black Amber, Big Blow and Coleridge which were closely bunched. Ahead of Cardigan, Zohov, Master Proven, and Yeman, Alonsun eased a trifle passing the stands with nine furlongs to run but he kept four or five lengths ahead of Column, Big Blow, Black Amber, Master Proven, Rosebelle, and Pretty Chance. Approaching the half-mile, Big Blow and Master Proven began to improve and were soon disputing the lead with Alonsun which' started to weaken. Entering the straight, Big Blow and Master Proven were clear by a length and Clinker staged a run on the outside. Straight Lead and Llanisfair kept making up ground but Yeman, which gained a run on the inside, kept up a brilliant finish to win by a length and three-quarters from Straight Lead, which beat Llanisfair by two lengths. Column ran fourth, and Pretty Chance fifth. Then came Black Amber, Cardigan, Clinker, Swift Gold, Marseen, and Gillace. The last four were Coleridge, Master Proven, Alonsun and Big Blow. Lady Debra was fractious and delayed the start of the Great Northern Foal Stakes, in which Ganymede began brilliantly and was a length ahead running to the five furlongs from Salaam and Lady Debra. After two furlongs. Ganymede led by two lengths and a half from Salaam, Lady Debra and Attila. Delayed Start There was a long delay before the start of the Railway Handicap due to several runners repeatedly breaking through the gates. He went further ahead nearing the straight where he was out by three lengths from Lorica, Sambula and Copernicus. . Copernicus made up ground but had no chance ot overtaking Supreme Court which won by two lengths. Copernicus was second by a length from Royal Crescent which came with a big run on the outside. Japonica was fourth. Then came Belle* Rosa, Yes Please, ’ Lorica, Rangipapa, Sambula and Bunyarra. Results:— ROBINSON HACK HANDICAP, Of £7OO. Seven furlongs. 5. S—SUPER FAIR (12) 8-0 . W. A.
