Shortage of Pennies.— Once again there is an absence in Britain this Christmas of new pennies. They used to be put in Christmas stockings, but the Royal Mint has struck no new pennies for genera] circulation since 1949. Some were struck in 1951 and 1953 for inclusion in a special set of coins celebrating the Festival of Britain and the Coronation. When there was a sudden demand for pennies in the north of England in 1955. the Royal Mint issued over s,ooo,ooo—but from stock.—London, December 25.
