DISLOYALTY IN RUSSIA
M.P. Says Discontent Is Wide (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, December 23. A former Labour Undei-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 4 Mr Christopher Mayhew, claimed .‘today tnat resistance to the Communist regime in Soviet Russia was much more widespread and bitter than was generally realised. Mr Mayhew, speaking in a House of Commons debate, said that tneie were completely reliable reports of strikes in famous Soviet factories and many signs of increasing political disloyalty among professional, technical and academic people, especially students. Mr Mayhew said that he had many contacts with these intellectual circles in the last two years. He considered tnat Britain underestimated the extent of political dis content in Russia at present. “Even to foreigners, some of these people show a surprising degree of frankness. . . . Their demands are the same as those of all who revolt against tyranny—namely: genuine democratic control of government at all stages,” he said.
