Y.M.C.A. HOSTEL
£BOOO TENDER LET FOR ALTERATIONS
An £BOOO contract for the reconstruction of the second floor of the Young Men’s Christian Association hostel in Christchurch had now been let, and work would begin early in the New Year, said Mr M. M. Betts, the general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., yesterday. The reconstruction would make provision for 13 more beds, bringing the total to 41, Mi Betts said. The rooms would be sky-lit, and would have built-in dressing tables and modern floor coverings. There would be full toilet facilities. The Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Hanan) had granted a subsidy at the rate of almost £ for £. “Since 1950, when we were forced to dose down a large part of the hostel because it did not conform to the egress code, the board of directors has been very concerned about our facilities.” Mr Betts said. “The Y.M.C.A. has not been able to fulfil its function as a hostel, particularly for young men from country districts and for overseas students,” he said. “The reconstruction plans provided for exits complying with the code.”
